Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

In recent years, the rise of insecurity due to insurgency and armed banditry in Nigeria has necessitated the establishment of vigilante groups, especially in rural areas. Mubi South, located in Adamawa State, is one of the regions significantly affected by these security challenges. Vigilante groups have emerged as a local response to the growing insecurity, often working in collaboration with state security agencies to protect communities and restore law and order. These groups have played a crucial role in ensuring economic security, especially for local businesses and farmers whose livelihoods are threatened by criminal activities.

Despite their contribution to security, the effectiveness of vigilante groups in securing economic livelihoods and fostering local economic stability remains an under-researched topic. This study aims to assess the impact of vigilante groups on economic security in Mubi South, focusing on how their activities contribute to protecting businesses, agriculture, and trade from the disruptions caused by insecurity.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The growing insecurity in Mubi South has severely affected economic activities, with businesses, farmers, and traders facing frequent disruptions. While state security forces have made efforts to combat these threats, vigilante groups have become a primary support mechanism for ensuring the safety of economic activities. However, there is a need for a comprehensive evaluation of how these groups influence economic security, and whether their interventions lead to more sustainable economic development in the region.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of vigilante groups in improving economic security in Mubi South.

  2. To analyze the impact of vigilante activities on local businesses and agricultural production.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of collaboration between vigilante groups and government security agencies in ensuring economic stability.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How have vigilante groups contributed to economic security in Mubi South?

  2. What impact have vigilante groups had on local businesses and agricultural productivity?

  3. How effective is the collaboration between vigilante groups and government security agencies?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Vigilante groups have played a significant role in enhancing economic security in Mubi South.

  2. Vigilante activities have positively impacted local businesses and agricultural production.

  3. Collaboration between vigilante groups and security agencies improves economic stability in the region.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it will provide valuable insights into the role of community-based security structures in enhancing economic security in conflict-prone regions. The findings will be beneficial for policymakers, security agencies, and development organizations seeking to strengthen local economic resilience in the face of insecurity. Additionally, the study will contribute to the broader discourse on the effectiveness of vigilante groups in supporting national security objectives.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Mubi South LGA in Adamawa State and examine the activities of vigilante groups within this region. It will assess their impact on various sectors, including agriculture, trade, and local businesses. Limitations include potential biases in responses from participants due to security concerns and limited access to areas with active conflict.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Vigilante Groups: Local, non-governmental groups established to safeguard communities against crime and violence, often working with state security agencies.

  • Economic Security: The protection of economic activities from disruption, including safeguarding livelihoods, businesses, and trade from external threats such as crime and instability.

  • Collaboration: The process of working together, typically between vigilante groups and government security forces, to enhance security and economic stability.
